Week 7, part 1

Tuesday, 11/3 12:00
Meeting #11
Attendance: 7

  • Philosophy of Improv (paraphrased from a blog I found), Part I
    • every scene has a soundtrack (rhythm/pace/emotion)
    • Always know Who and Where you are for every scene
    • "earn wit every day" aka take in experiences, learn, watch good comedians and things that inspire you. That's what you have to work from, it'll be on the top of your head for you to draw from.
    • Know your Character = their choices and opinions, aka have a sense of how they will react to the environment and other characters. It'll make it easier on you.
    • When in doubt, talk about philosophy
    • don't play it safe, don't be afraid to make mistakes discoveries
    • the Moment is the goal, so go be in the Moment
    • have a plot, but you don't need to discuss it (better known as show, don't tell)
    • have faith in the scene (not control over it)
    • learn from improv sessions (skills, new discoveries, perhaps about yourself?)
  • Games
    • Yes, And...
    • Questions
    • Dating Game
    • Pan Left, Pan Right (finally!)
  • Review of Games
    • Yes, And: change the subject more, get more abstract/off topic
    • Q's: keep it short, add characters? vary questions/question types more
      • have it be part of a scene
      • we should create a scene generator
    • Dating Game: went well; don't choose your own character (too obvious)
      • choose characters/quirks out of a hat?
      • (afterthought: don't say the answer when you have it, let the others figure it out)
    • PLPR: was confusing.
      • learn Left from Right (all of us)
      • guidelines for starting scenes = location, characters, first line
Meeting adjourned at 1:57
