Week 7, part 1

Tuesday, 11/3 12:00
Meeting #11
Attendance: 7

  • Philosophy of Improv (paraphrased from a blog I found), Part I
    • every scene has a soundtrack (rhythm/pace/emotion)
    • Always know Who and Where you are for every scene
    • "earn wit every day" aka take in experiences, learn, watch good comedians and things that inspire you. That's what you have to work from, it'll be on the top of your head for you to draw from.
    • Know your Character = their choices and opinions, aka have a sense of how they will react to the environment and other characters. It'll make it easier on you.
    • When in doubt, talk about philosophy
    • don't play it safe, don't be afraid to make mistakes discoveries
    • the Moment is the goal, so go be in the Moment
    • have a plot, but you don't need to discuss it (better known as show, don't tell)
    • have faith in the scene (not control over it)
    • learn from improv sessions (skills, new discoveries, perhaps about yourself?)
  • Games
    • Yes, And...
    • Questions
    • Dating Game
    • Pan Left, Pan Right (finally!)
  • Review of Games
    • Yes, And: change the subject more, get more abstract/off topic
    • Q's: keep it short, add characters? vary questions/question types more
      • have it be part of a scene
      • we should create a scene generator
    • Dating Game: went well; don't choose your own character (too obvious)
      • choose characters/quirks out of a hat?
      • (afterthought: don't say the answer when you have it, let the others figure it out)
    • PLPR: was confusing.
      • learn Left from Right (all of us)
      • guidelines for starting scenes = location, characters, first line

Club Advisor Appreciation Post

My lovely people,

Surely many of us are unfamiliar with Improv Club's Club Advisor ("We have a Club Advisor?!"), so here's a bit of information I thought might interest you:

Our Club Advisor is Wendy Wagoner, and she teaches Broadcast Performance (read: voice acting) here at Cuesta. It is an online class, BCST 227, and she takes her students through many exercises and scripts to build skills, confidence, and also to produce voice overs to be proud of. She is very dedicated to her students and the course.

As a part of the course, she runs an online radio station (read: opportunity to get on the air)! She also has connections at KGUR, our Cuesta radio station, so there's plenty of opportunity to reach the public once we get some material "on tape."

In addition, we will stop by the reprographics department and meet this wonderful Advisor of ours next Tuesday (10/27), so we can all get acquainted.

That's all for now, folks!

Welcome to Reality

We're a real club now! Isn't it exciting?!

We're meeting Tuesday at 12 in the courtyard by the bookstore, but we'll move once we've taken care of the business side of the meeting, since we're not authorized to use the space yet.

Same drill Thursday at 3:30.

Bring event ideas, we'll get them right into the planning process.

We also have offices to fill. If you haven't read over the election procedure in our Club Constitution, I highly recommend it.

We'll have a sign-up sheet for anyone interested in the offices, and the election will be held at a later date depending on who can make which meeting time.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Club Day Recap

Club Day was a success for Improv Club!

We played Back in My Day, Actor's Nightmare, and a little game I like to call Long Time No See, in which we would pick a stranger, pick a name for them, and greet them loudly by said name from across the room as if we'd known them for years. Once we let the confusion sink in, we'd drop the punchline: "Join Improv Club!"

We have plenty of names, email addresses, and phone numbers to help get the word out, and we'll just have to look and see who shows up to the meetings!

That's all for now, folks!

For quick reference, I'm posting a link to Fool Disclosure Improv's encyclopedia of improv games.

Come to Club Day today, we might end up playing some of these!
